Why Are My Breasts Coming Out of the Bottom of My Bra?

By Mari Thomas-Welland, sports engineer and founder of MAAREE. Published 12 January 2025. Updated 30 August 2026.

Boobs falling out of the bottom of your bra means one of two things: the band is too loose, or the cup is too small. Sometimes both at once. Call it falling out, popping out, or slipping out, it's the same two causes and the same two fixes. It is not a flaw in your body. It is a bra that has stopped doing its one job, which is to stay put.

Nearly all of the fixes below take five minutes in front of a mirror. No tape measure required.

What causes boobs to fall out of the bottom of a bra?

Four things cause it, and the band is behind most of them. If your sports bra feels too big and keeps sliding down as you move, start there. Work through these in order.

1. The band is too loose

The band carries about 80% of your support, so a loose one lets everything slide down and pop out the bottom. Stand side-on to a mirror. If the band rides up higher at the back than the front, it is too big. Nine other signs your bra doesn't fit live on this same band problem, so it is worth checking those too while you are at it.

Fix: Size down in the band until it sits snug and level all the way round, firm enough to stay put when you raise your arms, not so tight it digs in. If you can slide more than two fingers under it at rest, it is still too loose.

2. The cups are too small

Cups that are too small are the other half of the problem, and they slip out from the bottom just as often as they spill over the top. A cup with nowhere left to put your breast tissue pushes the whole bra away from your body, and the bottom is the weakest point, so that is where it gives first. If you are already sizing the band down (see above), the cup usually needs to go up to match, because band and cup work as a pair.

Fix: Size up in the cup until it fully encloses your breast with no spillage from the top, sides, or bottom. Dropping a band size but keeping the cup the same never works. That is sister sizing, and it is worth understanding before you reorder anything.

3. Your bra is worn out

Elastic gives up long before fabric looks worn, so a bra can look fine and still have lost its band tension. If you have had it in regular rotation for more than a year, that is probably what is happening.

Fix: Replace it. MAAREE bras come with a 12-month sports bra guarantee, so you are covered if the support gives out sooner than it should.

4. Wrong style for your shape

Not every bra suits every breast shape, and a fuller or lower-set shape often needs more coverage than a standard compression style gives.

Fix: Try a fuller-coverage style built for your shape. Our Solidarity is built for high-impact, larger-bust support; Empower is the everyday option if high-impact is overkill for what you're doing.

Why does bra fit matter this much?

Up to 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra.* Most have no idea, and most assume the discomfort is just how bras feel. It isn't. A properly fitted band and cup should be close to unnoticeable once you've got it on.

A free MAAREE fitting sorts this in about fifteen minutes over Zoom, no purchase needed. Book a free fitting whenever suits you.

What I learned fitting women with this exact problem

When I started working in the sports bra industry, I was shocked by how many women were dealing with exactly this and just assumed it was normal. I did too, for a long time. It wasn't until I started testing bras under lab conditions that I realised how much of it came down to fit, not bodies.

That realisation is where MAAREE started. Every MAAREE bra has Overband® Technology, a curved panel that runs over the top of the chest and controls the upward bounce most sports bras leave unaddressed, the same bounce that leaves some women feeling like their boobs are bouncing out of the bra mid-run. It won't fix a band that's the wrong size. Nothing can override that. But paired with the right fit, it's the difference between a bra that survives a session and one that needs constant adjusting.

How do you stop it happening again?

  • Band: snug and level all the way round, no riding up at the back.
  • Cups: full coverage, nothing spilling from the top, sides, or bottom.
  • Age: under a year in regular rotation, or replaced.
  • Style: matched to your shape, not just your size.

Run through those four and you'll usually land on the culprit in under a minute. If you're still not sure, that's exactly what a fitting is for. Fifteen minutes, free, no purchase needed.

Boobs falling out of your bra: FAQs

What does it mean when your boobs fall out of the bottom of your bra?

It means the band is too loose, the cup is too small, or both. The band should be doing most of the work; when it's loose, the bra slides down and the breast tissue has nowhere to go but out the bottom.

Is it the band or the cup causing my breasts to fall out of my bra?

Check the band first. If it rides up at the back, that's your answer, size down. If the band already sits level and it's still happening, the cup is too small and needs to go up. Often both need adjusting at once.

Why do my boobs keep dropping out of my sports bra when I run or work out?

Movement makes a loose fit worse, not better, because the band and cup are working against gravity and impact at the same time. A bra that just about holds still standing still will usually fail the moment you start moving, whether that's running, jumping, or a HIIT class, which is exactly when you need it most.

Why do my boobs fall out of my bra when I bend over or reach up?

Bending and reaching stretch the band and shift the cup, so a fit that's borderline standing still can fail the moment you move differently. If it only happens when you bend over or lift your arms, the band is very likely too loose or the cup edge is sitting too low. Run the mirror checks above for both.

Can a worn-out bra cause my breasts to spill out of the bottom?

Yes. Elastic loses tension with wear even when the fabric still looks fine, so a bra that fitted well a year ago can have quietly stopped supporting you. If it's been in heavy rotation for over a year, replace it.

Does my breast shape affect whether this happens?

It can. Fuller or lower-set shapes often need more coverage than a standard compression-only style provides, so the same size in the wrong style can still spill out at the bottom. Trying a fuller-coverage style, not just a different size, sometimes solves it.

How do I stop my boobs falling out of my bra for good?

Get the band and cup size right together, replace bras once the elastic goes, and pick a style built for your shape. If you do all three and it's still happening, book a fitting. It's usually a five-minute fix once someone can actually see the problem.

Can I get fitted without buying anything?

Yes. A MAAREE fitting is free, runs over Zoom, takes around fifteen minutes, and there's no purchase required, even afterwards. Book a free fitting whenever you like.
